Years later, Hérold’s theological reflection was that Haitians were never afraid to travel many miles in order to achieve their goals and speak with their God. At first, he did not fully understand who God was. He was too young to place his trust in Him.

From that moment on, Jérôme understood that salvation is personal and individual. He could no longer depend solely on his mother’s beliefs. He had to discover God for himself. His curiosity created within him a deep hunger to seek more about God and to discover who He truly is.

Hérold began reflecting on the mystery of God through everything he had witnessed in his community. He questioned the pain, oppression, and suffering of the people. Some Haitians still worship other gods, such as in Santa María, instead of the true God, the Creator of the universe, who sent His Son to save us from our sins. Hérold used to travel many miles with his mother and groups of people in search of spiritual healing and in pursuit of God. Even though they could not see Him, they recognized His existence.

Therefore, his responsibility was not to convince them to have faith, because their actions had already demonstrated faith. Instead, his desire was to help them recognize the true God and to introduce them to God’s plan of salvation.
